Ascending your Priorities

Today marks the start of our fifth year in existence!

The feeling is exhilarating and I’m sure that the small bunch of old faithfuls in our organisation feels the same way. The newcomers have an edge for sure as they have had the luxury of a process in place whereas the old timers went through the rigmarole of settling down in a seemingly chaotic environment and were actually instrumental directly or indirectly in the making of a process based organisation. They have traveled with us in the long and bumpy road and during this journey, have forged close, emotional relationships that will see us till the end destination.  The journey which we had started out with stars in our eyes on March 19th, 2008 still continues and the exuberance with which we began has not diminished over the years!

We wished to become a conglomerate and it is with pride that I announce to one and all, that the first steps towards this goal have already been initiated. In the course of the FY 2012 – 13, we would announce it in more detail.

Our memberships such as NASSCOM, ESC, ERA, TASMIA, TiE still hold us in good stead. Our previous Associate Membership with NASSCOM has been upgraded to a regular membership wherein which we are now entitled to voting rights and various other privileges.

The last year found us shifting base to the reputed NSIC Software Technology Park as we direly needed more space.  This expansion has led to our esteemed membership with STPI. In a bid to accommodate the laudable aspects of inclusivity and diversity, we have also become a corporate member of eWIT (Empowering Women in IT). One of our most prestigious achievements last year was being bestowed with the NASSCOM Emerge 50 Award. This was possible due to the focused and innovative efforts of the AscendersTech team.

Last year saw us expand our technology base as well, in terms of creating new practices, or more specifically, Centers of Excellence in Dynamics Axapta CRM and EPM apart from our existent ERP practice. To make sure that all practices and projects run seamlessly and smoothly, we have also established the much needed Project Management Office and it is doing its job efficiently. The Delivery team has been inducted into the PMO style of delegation and work and we are proud to declare that projects can and will be delivered on time and with the expected quality outputs thanks to the untiring efforts of the PMO.

In this regard, we would like to announce that from 1st April 2012, our Finance Team would be working on the Dynamics Axapta Finance Module thus making our internal Axapta implementation a grand success. We also foresee, in quick succession, the implementation of the dynamics Axapta HR Module.

We have changed our style of Operations stressing on the need to be a lean, trim and strong organisation. The new concept of Account Managers especially in the HRO Division has been introduced and has shown tremendous result in terms of Client Relationship Management and as a consequence, we hope to see profitability as well. We can boast of following the best practices in Recruitment especially where process and speed are concerned. The HRO organisation is by far, the leanest and meanest, as far as business is concerned. The sourcing team has been established with a view to reduce dependencies on commercial portals, strengthen Social Recruiting skills, save time and create elite and specialized skills in Recruitment. We are in the process of establishing a well-oiled and professional Recruitment Mechanism and every Ascenders recruiter is essentially a part of it.

An aggressive Sales team is in place with very focused business goals. We have also for the first time in AscendersTech history, introduced an Inside Sales Team and we are in the process of reaping our investments. The need for each and every Ascender to be a Sales person in his / her own right cannot be stressed enough. It is also in this context that we wholeheartedly reiterate that AscendersTech is a Sales driven Organisation. Our new branding, given the present circumstances, lays claim to this fact.

Our support teams especially HR, Admin, Finance and IT have all been well established and further fortified with the help of experienced stalwarts in the industry.

We have come a long way under the capable leadership of our beloved CEO Dr. Thiru. Our flagship Ascenders Technologies Private Limited has been recognized across states crossing even national boundaries not just for our efficient delivery but also because of each and every Ascender’s realization and acceptance that the our priority is ascending our Customer’s priorities!

Team Ascenders, I give out the call for renewed vigour from you all to continue our exciting journey of Business Excellence as a part of the Ascenders family. Let us together chart out the route to our destiny and always be a part of the celebration that is ASCENDERSTECH!

We take pleasure in sharing with everyone an important milestone in the History of AscendersTech:

As the very theme suggests the ERA Annual Convention dealt with ‘Engaging the Unemployed Talent’ was a concentrated effort to bring together some of India’s best minds to provoke thought on one of the biggest paradoxes of our country. On the one hand, we are in no dearth of ’employable youth’. But this fact remains mere ‘data’ because in reality, the said youth are not always the ideal choice of the organizations and businesses which desire to engage and utilize educated/ skilled youth.

The ERA Annual Convention brochure

The sole objective of this convention is the uplift of this vast section of society whose amazing talent and prowess (usually unrecognized because of factors such as amateur soft skills) can be tapped and exploited to benefit themselves, the corporates and subsequently the nation as a whole.

It was envisaged that through this convention, the leaders on the dais and those in the audience would be positively sensitized to the plight of the youth and would step up to the daunting task that they are faced with!

The youth of India need to be empowered with all the required knowledge and skills to realize India’s potential to become a superpower; else the same youth might well  be reduced to a potent tool in the hands of misguiding, degenerative forces that work against the interests of a progressive, developing India!

The ERA Annual Convention, in other words, was a call to all the leaders to join forces and do their bit towards nurturing the future generations and, in the process, fortify our country with the power of youth with all its magnificent capabilities. We as ERA members realize that it is high time for us facilitate the entry of our talented resource pool so that they carve out their own niches as responsible sons and daughters of the nation.

Three years have quickly flown by and this is the time to sit back and take stock of our achievements and our failures.

Our achievements are plenty; we have, primarily, established “AscendersTech” which is no small achievement. We have decided that if growth is what we are aiming for, then change will definitely be a way of life at AscendersTech and we are game for change.

To facilitate growth, we appreciate the need for a more self disciplined, orderly and professional attitude when it comes to the work place. We understand that the right attitude and the right perspective will go a long way in building Brand Ascenders. And this is what our ongoing theme for the New Year will be: creating Brand Ascenders.

Last year we made a mention of a byline that spoke about ‘the fittest’ and ‘the ascent to survival’; this year proves that yes, Team Ascenders is rightfully comprised of only the fittest and truly they have ascended in every sense. We salute those who chose to ride the rollercoaster with us and have only got down excited and wanting some more.

The last year has seen a much better and fine tuned process orientation and integration within the AscendersTech system. Our ISO 9001:2008 certification has kept us in good stead as each and every Ascender, I am proud to state, has become a vigilant process owner. Our customers too, have experienced the well planned and organized efforts placed into their projects by seeing first hand our efficient utilization of time, technological know-how and resources.

We are still respectfully and actively associated with Nimbus Partners, UK, Redington (India) Limited, SUN, IBM, NASSCOM, ERA, ESC, Tasmia, Microsoft, and TIE. We have achieved the Microsoft Gold Partner status last year and we will soon, on the strength of our sales transactions, become preferred partners to Microsoft. As regards ERA, AscendersTech is proud to share the exciting news that Our CEO, Dr Thiru, has been elected as the Honorary Treasurer for the Executive Council (EC) in ERA at the PAN India level for the year 2011-12. The Executive Recruiters Association (ERA) represents the executive recruitment firms of India. It establishes professional and ethical standards for its members and provides information to the media and public in the field of Executive Recruitment which is a specialized profession that helps organizations identify, evaluate and recruit executives at various levels. AscendersTech has been an ERA member all these years and has also, more significantly, been actively involved with ERA. In the year 2009-10, our CEO, Dr. Thiru had held the position of Co-Convenor of the ERA Chennai Chapter. He has been holding the position of Convenor for the ERA Chennai Chapter during the year 2010-11. The annual elections for ERA (Executive Recruiters’ Association) have finally put an end to all the speculation regarding the new pillars of the Association for the coming financial year. And we have very proudly announced to the world that Our CEO, Dr. Thiru, has been elected as the Honorary Treasurer for the Executive Council of ERA for 2011-12, needless to say, because of his dedicated and tireless efforts to raise the bar of “ethics & integrity” and above all, ensuring that his efforts manifest in concrete benefits to all ERA members and the recruiting community, at large.

As far as our own HRO (Human Resources Outsourcing) Division is concerned, we have a large team of professional recruiters doing their job with the enthusiasm and gusto of youngsters playing contact sports! Our clientele has increased considerably and the requirements coming with them are getting larger and more complicated by the day. This keeps our HRO division totally occupied. Speed and smart work are the watchwords of their division and as professionals they aim for big numbers every day.

In the Technology section, we have grown highly focused over the years and this has been communicated to our customers in no uncertain terms. We are armed with a fortified resource pool of Microsoft Dynamics Axapta certified professionals. Most of these uniquely endowed youngsters have been deployed at various customer locations tending to the customer pain areas and providing relief in terms of instantaneous and effective solutions. As qualified and experienced Dynamics Axapta resources are scarce, it has become a policy at AscendersTech to breed talent in house. We hope to continue in our mission to dominate the Dynamics Axapta market, not only in terms of talented and certified resources but also in terms of exceptionally smart technological consulting and solution building. Brand Ascenders is now slowly and steadily being sought out from many other established Microsoft partners as the partner who really partners in every sense.

It is interesting to note that we had actually started off as a Technology Company but had, along the way, diversified by entering the staffing sector. Staffing as a division is doing very well but there had always been a yearning to do the things we had actually set out to do. The last year has been very satisfying in the sense that we have been doing just that. Our Technology division is growing in leaps and bounds. This is perhaps because we have opened our eyes to becoming a sales driven organization.

So now we can boast of having a HRO division, a Technology division and a Sales division vying with each other to outdo the other. There is camaraderie in the air and the competition, though fierce, is friendly. Kudos to the young leaders who have created this excellent and enviable environment within the organization! That brings me to an essential objective that the company will strive for this coming year. We will strive to make AscendersTech a happier place. A happy environment will go a long way in reaching our goals. Team Ascenders, bring out your smiles and put your hearts and souls into your jobs. Open your minds to the concept of mentorship. It will do you a world of good in the long run.

Enablement is other concept that we would like to practice wholeheartedly at all levels. The upcoming young leaders of AscendersTech have to be aligned to this idea and need to adapt themselves and their next-in-line to the same. Another concept that I truly believe in establishing within AscendersTech is the acceptance of Diversity and subsequently, creating the inclusive mindset. Let us focus on talent alone and see if we are capable of handling it without being blinded by other insignificant factors such as language, appearance, gender, physical impairments etc. Talent acquisition, retention and management will be the top agenda of the coming year and we expect each and every one of you to be an integral part of this exercise. Team Ascenders, we have expanded in terms of size and consequently, in terms of infrastructure too. And it looks as if this expansion will only continue in the coming months.

In the course of our business expansion and all the energy spent on it, we have forgotten a crucial thing and this could be termed as a failure on our part. As a corporate entity, we have not done as much as we should have in terms of CSR activities. We need to compensate for this oversight and this year, we will make amends.

In the meanwhile, as we set these goals for ourselves, let us, simultaneously gear ourselves to achieve them. Achievements are not a big thing for AscendersTech; the question still remains: are we capable of handling achievement and taking it to the next level? To do this, we must be able to envision the next level as a collective effort. Let each of us blend into one entity and exploit our individual strengths for one common cause – AscendersTech.

In other words: Are you ready to be a BRAND ASCENDER?

The opening ceremony with prayers

Bridge 2011 was a conference conducted by the ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT) in association with NASSCOM, with a specific focus on skills for future and the need for innovation and entrepreneurship. The conference was an excellent initiative to bridge the industry-academia gap. An atmosphere and platform was provided for the participants to discuss key issues in the improvement of the Industry-Institute scenario today. The issues revolved around technology, innovation, applied research, entrepreneurship, future virtual world, curriculum change, sustainability etc. Bridge 2011 proved to be the ideal opportunity for both industrialists and academicians to share their views, opinions, ideas and methods for making campus products industry ready. One of the major objectives of the conference was to arrive at an understanding of the future requirements of skills among entry level (both from the Academic point of view as well as the Industry point of view) employees of new gen organizations in the Indian IT and ITeS sector.

The focus of the discussions was also on the enablers to bridge the Industry – Academia gap; case studies were shared both from the Industry and Academia. Faculty development was highlighted and it was stressed that teachers required to be trained; refresher courses were a must. The main platform for change in the academic scenario lay in Social Media, eLearning, mLearning, assessment standardization etc. Discussions related to sustainability and innovation looked at the roles of the Academia, Government and the Industry for the purpose of deriving sustainable models and innovation.

The excitement at NILF 2011 is truly infectious. Our CEO Dr. Thiru is having a whale of a time as he has been moving back and forth from the various concepts and activities that NASSCOM has so thoughtfully and professionally laid out for the delegates.

Dr. Thiru @ NILF 2011

According to constant updates from Dr. Thiru, there have been over 30 delegations for the NASSCOM Leadership Forum this year; there are seven country connects distributed across the three days of the annual NASSCOM mega event. The world class Leadership and Industry keynotes apart, there are unconferencing events such as Idea Incubator, Leader2Leader Forum, Master Classes, Roundtables etc.

With Professors Philip and Maria, University of Scotland

NASSCOM certainly knows how to mix business with pleasure. There had been two evenings planned in tune to this tempting and

With Mr. Purushottaman, Regional Director, NASSCOM & Mr. Pramod the ERA Associate Director

potent combination. The Global Leadership Awards was a dazzling event and the Entertainment evening had everyone tapping away and swaying to the Indian dances showcased with its riotous music.

With the NASSCOM team

Trust NASSCOM to do things differently; the highlight of the three day NASSCOM bonanza is happening today (yes, the very last day of the NILF 2011). Dr. Thiru will be all ears when Actor- Director Shekhar Kapoor talks about the Indian Jugaad; he will be in rapt attention when Shiv Nadar speaks about inclusivity; Dr. Thiru also plans on witnessing the business discussions which will involve Adil Zainulbhai, Managing Director, India, McKinsey & Company, Antony Leung, Senior MD, Chairman Greater China, The Blackstone Group, Pramod Bhasin, CEO, Genpact will summarize the session with SWOT Analyses of the business models of India and China. A great take away from the NILF indeed. NASSCOM is always ahead of the game as it is their business to be so they will also have Nik Gowing from BBC talking about how Social Media will become the Fifth Estate.

Dr. Thiru with former President of NASSCOM, Mr. Kiran Karnik

With Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM who believes in celebrating "the spirit of Global oneness in general and innovation in the Indian IT sector in particular"

Dr. Thiru has these important things to share with us as soon as he is back with us tomorrow:

  • The overall Drivers for this Decade: The Leadership and Vision sessions at the Forum has made it very clear to AscendersTech that we will be chanting the new mantra i.e. Innovate, Redesign and Reinvent. In keeping with this mantra, AscendersTech has already been on the innovation path thus pushing us further and without any doubt, into the IT leadership list in this decade. The other important take away from the NILF 2011 is the acceptance of cross-generational and globalized workforce. It has been discovered that AscendersTech has been in the right path so far as our plans to enter the cloud computing realm is concerned. It seems cloud computing will also herald the next change in IT outsourcing strategies and BPO solutions need to be scalable, ‘on demand’ and compliant. In other words BPO solutions offered by AscendersTech will from now onwards be on the IT cloud.

  • The strategies that work especially during times of ambiguity and methods of sustenance during adverse conditions; the overview of the global IT-BPO market, transformation in a connected world, leadership in the new global economy, technology being a prime enabler in business transformation within organizations, the emerging business opportunities that can be tapped through the IT-BPO industry, issues related to technology, trends, the IT eco-system and so on.

The much awaited New Year Bash started at around 10:00 am at The Accord Metropolitan Hotel at T. Nagar. The Ascenders had gathered at the Hall Sapphire to conduct the Town Hall Meeting for the third quarter of last year. We started with the Director welcoming the Ascenders and presenting the Organization Chart of the Company. The finalized and focused Service Offerings of Ascenders Technologies was presented. The Organization hierarchy was explained in brief, stressing on the six levels that it comprised. It was hinted that the various unit heads would drill down their own Organization structures during their own presentations and would help fit all our resources with their different positions into their respective levels. With that formal opening of the last Quarter presentation, the floor was taken up by Mr. Suresh Kumar Radhakrishnan, Business Head taking care of all Sales & Marketing activities of Ascenders Technologies; next, it was Mr. Maria Suresh who is presently heading the Human Resources Outsourcing (HRO) division and is responsible for its Delivery; finally, Mr. Abel Johnny, our Practice Head – Microsoft DAX, who is currently heading the Technology division and taking care of its delivery went on to present their achievements in the last Quarter, their respective targets for the next Quarter and the strategy planned to achieve them. The Ascenders were taken through a detailed presentation by each of the Unit heads.

Our Business Head (watch out folks, he means business!)

Projections that promise...Maria Suresh is confident that team work pays

The able Abel presenting his Modus Operandi

After the exclusively Ascenders in house session, we were in for a pleasant surprise. We had the privilege of listening to our some of our Customers and our Principals.

Mr. Krishnamurthy - Ex Microsoft Champion & the Ultimate Salesman!

Mr. G. Krishnamurthy, a renowned Partner Account Manager with Microsoft till very recently and currently the CMO with CCH PRO Systems had been invited as a special guest. Mr. Krishnamurthy met the Ascenders and presented a session power packed with motivation. The videos he showed us had the Ascenders glued to our seats but ready to take off on a dynamic pilgrimage to the ultimate Mecca of Life Skills – Achievement. He spoke of his humble beginnings and his adventurous journey to success. He showed us that anyone could reach great heights provided they followed a disciplined methodology. Mr. Krishnamurthy stressed on the need for taking the organization to the level of greatness. He insisted that KPIs and KRAs needed to be set and reviewed consistently on a regular basis and Organizational success was a matter of three steps:

The grand Vision coupled with the strategy to realize it!

Personal greatness or in other words, finding one’s own voice; moving on to leadership greatness, meaning helping others to find their voice and finally, concluding with Organizational greatness by being focused and hell bent on execution. He highlighted these phases of bringing an Organization to its deserving state of greatness by playing a video of a herd of African wild buffalo actually being inspired and, as a direct consequence, motivated by one aggressive member of the herd to attack a whole pack of hungry lions that had caught one of the buffalo calves for their meal. This one member had the courage and conviction to charge at the lions who were about to sink their fangs into the calf that they had already salvaged from a crocodile. This brave act inspired the other members to follow suit and they did not rest till the little one was safely back in the fold. The herd emerged a proud and victorious team. What better analogy for a startup like Ascenders Technologies?

Mr. Purushottaman, Regional Director, NASSCOM made a brief guest appearance but did us proud by promising the wholehearted support of NASSCOM.

As always, he had the time to share his invaluable and tremendously reliable insights into the IT sector. The IT industry was booming as NASSCOM is able to predict that in 2011, most of the IT business would be realized from the domestic markets.

Words of Wisdom from none other than the Sage of NASSCOM-Mr. Purushottaman

Before he made a quick getaway, he shared with us clues as to where IT services would be most required in the coming year and to take a leaf out of the existing success stories about tapping the business and executing it.

In rapt attention...

Mr. B. S. Anand, Director – Finance, Columbus IT, Dubai was an honoured guest being one of the AscendersTech major customers. Mr. Anand had come so prepared that his slides were customized for the AscendersTech team!

The Customer presenting the AscendersTech Agenda for the New Year

Having a valued customer himself telling us in no uncertain manner how to go about perfecting the art of retaining our customers was an excellent session by itself.

Mr. Anand had the 'Ascendarians' in raptures!

Mr. Anand stressed the need to walk that extra mile to retain customers by showing that we cared enough, by responding to their needs and queries and by consistent service and support. He called attention to keeping the lines of communication alive and open at all times; he insisted on not delinking from the customer at any given point; primarily, he mentioned the need to empathize with the customer and actually feel their pain in order to service them better.

To effectively retain the customers, Mr. Anand shared a lot of priceless tips to be followed within the organization. As a starter, he pointed out that internally all employees are friends and extended family and must be treated as such. He stated that everybody in his/her own right is a leader and could contribute at any level, as IT is considered a privileged industry being wholly knowledge oriented.

Forward March, Team Ascenders!

Positive thinking and optimism were the order of the day and he advised the Ascenders to imbibe these qualities in order to build Ascenders Technologies on the same foundation. Excellence and Quality should be sought after; while travelling the journey in search of these two organization goals, every individual must contribute in every aspect of the business in a polite manner, express one’s ideas however small and most importantly not to lose heart or admit defeat and cold shelf if these ideas are shot down initially.

In an organization the concept of mutual trust and respect are imperative. For continuous future client engagement, customer service is key. By turning current customers into long term partners, excellent reference sites are firmly established and repeat business is assured.

Mr. Anand highlighted the 4P Doctrine of People, Processes, Pricing and Profit for leveraging the AscendersTech business. He concluded the session by impressing on the Ascenders that we have to dream BIG; being global now is excellent but AscendersTech had to find a suitable ranking in the top 5 Global Consulting Businesses very soon. A slide for us to fill in was presented and Mr. Anand insisted that we send it across to him filled so that, in keeping with his self-appointed, additional role of AscendersTech Mentor, he would guide us and monitor our progress. His session left us in awe of his generous nature and motivates us to sharpen our axes, roll up our sleeves and get to work!

AscendersTech was honoured to do the honours for Mr. Anand

Then we had Mr. Rajashekar Reddy, Partner Technology Advisor again from Microsoft who had come to wish AscendersTech all the very best in the New Year.

New Year wishes from Mr. Rajashekar Reddy

AscendersTech is indeed very fortunate to have the faithful and never ending support of Customers and Principals alike. Mr. Reddy was completely spell bound by the previous presentations that he knew that the Ascenders had received every conceivable guideline for achieving a vibrant yet smooth sailing business year. He kept his value additions for a more personal and informal interaction with the Ascenders during lunch.

Another important guest of the day was the inimitable Dr. Subair Khan, a famous and much sought after Orthopedic Surgeon in the city. He has been associated with Ascenders Technologies right from its inception and also happens to be one of our prized customers. The tech savvy Doctor mentioned how the Ascenders had been a vital part of his brain child and also went on to state that with the help of our team he was planning to take the portal to the next level.

A much awaited special invitee walked in with his best wishes to the AscendersTech team. He was none other than  Mr. Sathya .S,  Senior Manager – Applications Development at MHRIL. Mr. Sathya has been a pivotal factor when it comes to our professional relationship with one of our most revered customers MHRIL and AscendersTech is truly proud to be associated with him. Our onsite team receives timely support, guidance and facilitation at MHRIL from Mr. Sathya and team. He greeted the Ascenders in his usual affable manner and interacted with them during lunch.

The corporate session wound up before a  sumptuous buffet lunch.

Soup anyone?

After luncheon, it was play time! Our Events Manager Mr. Muralikrishnan had rushed to offer his services in spite of being out of station for the past one week on hectic business. He very courteously agreed to conduct our half day of fun and frolic and ensured that the AscendersTech team was a complete riot!

After the seriousness of the morning session, it was hilarious to see the Ascenders rolling on the marbled flooring of The Accord Metropolitan while playing the Longest Line, rummaging all over the place looking for pieces of newspaper to fill up the jigsaw puzzle, getting all knotted up (literally!) and then trying to get untangled in Stringing Along, not to mention the Smooching competition that the Ascenders are so fond of!

KISS or miss!!!

Putting the pieces together...

Weird team names were invented: Pachai , Pimpilikaa Pilaapi, Dazzling Birds, Smooth Criminals and Anti Virus!

The one Rupee coin made it’s come back from the Annual Day festivities and went on to find a higher value. This time it ended its circle with Kavitha Rose with an amazing worth of Rupees 10 Billion (and 1)!

Let the smooching begin!

A few more games were played and a lovely Birthday cake was cut for the benefit of the birthday babies of the last Quarter.

The Birthday Babies…

Birthday BASHING!

The day ended with a prize giving for the lucky teams who won the first three places in the competitions. Birthday gifts were also distributed.

So tied up…in work?

Tasty lipstick?

'Freedom from Bondage' was the war cry!

There were wide grins on everyone’s faces and a sense of utter bliss permeated the hall when everyone wished each other a fabulous 2011! There were hugs, kisses, smiles and laughter which rang through the hotel and then reverberated into the New Year with the Ascenders…
